Overview
Same-komon is an ultra-fine field of dots arranged in fan-shaped arcs, like shark skin.
鮫小紋は微細な点を扇状に並べた極小文様。遠目には無地に見え、格式高い小紋として武家に好まれた。
History & origin
Komon are the tiny repeating 'small crests' of Edo-period dyeing, and same-komon (shark komon) is one of the most refined. It was a signature pattern of the Kishu domain and worn on the formal kamishimo of samurai.
Symbolism & meaning
From a distance the pattern reads as a solid, dignified color; up close it reveals incredible detail. That restraint made it a symbol of quiet good taste and high status.
Traditional use
Same-komon is classic on Edo-komon kimono and remains a byword for understated elegance. As a wallpaper it gives a subtle, almost textured solid.
