麻の葉 Asano-ha
Asanoha is a six-fold star geometry that echoes the leaf of the hemp plant — one of the most recognisable of all Japanese patterns (wagara).
麻の葉は六角形を基にした星形の幾何文様。麻は丈夫でまっすぐ育つことから、子の健やかな成長を願って産着などに用いられた。

Each design is an original, hand-coded rendering of a traditional Japanese motif (wagara). The motifs are centuries old and in the public domain; the artwork here is entirely our own.
亀甲 Kikkou
Kikkou is a honeycomb of hexagons named for the shell of a tortoise, often filled with a small flower.
亀甲は亀の甲羅に似た六角形の連続文。長寿の象徴である亀にちなみ、健康と長寿を願う。中央に花菱を入れることも多い。
市松 Ichimatsu
Ichimatsu is the simple two-color chequerboard — endlessly continuous and quietly bold.
市松は二色の正方形を交互に並べた格子文。途切れず続くことから、繁栄や子孫繁栄の意味を持つ。
鱗 Uroko
Uroko fills the surface with triangles read as the scales of a snake, fish or dragon.
鱗は三角形を連ねた文様。蛇や魚の鱗に見立て、脱皮＝再生や厄除けの意味で武具などに用いられた。
矢絣 Yagasuri
Yagasuri is a field of arrow feathers (fletching), usually shown as bold vertical bands.
矢絣は矢羽根を並べた文様。射た矢は戻らないことから縁起物とされ、嫁入り道具にも使われた。
菱 Hishi
Hishi is a lattice of slim diamonds (rhombi) derived from the leaf of the water caltrop.
菱は斜め格子が作る菱形の文様。植物の菱に由来し、繁殖力から子孫繁栄・無病息災を願う。
鹿の子 Kanoko
Kanoko is a field of small tie-dyed dots that resemble the dappled back of a fawn.
鹿の子は絞り染めの粒を子鹿の背の斑点に見立てた文様。手間のかかる絞りゆえ、可憐さと贅沢さを表す。
釘抜 Kuginuki
Kuginuki takes its shape from the washer of a traditional nail-puller — a square frame around a diamond.
釘抜は釘を抜く道具の座金（四角に菱の穴）を象った文様。『苦を抜く』に通じる縁起文。
工字繋ぎ Kouji
Kouji-tsunagi links the character 工 ('work') along the diagonal into a continuous key-fret.
工字繋ぎは『工』の字を斜めに連ねた鍵繋ぎの地紋。途切れず連なることから繁栄を願う。
鮫小紋 Same-komon
Same-komon is an ultra-fine field of dots arranged in fan-shaped arcs, like shark skin.
鮫小紋は微細な点を扇状に並べた極小文様。遠目には無地に見え、格式高い小紋として武家に好まれた。
流水紋 Ryusuimon
Ryusuimon depicts flowing water as soft, curling streams and eddies.
流水紋は流れる水を描いた文様。火除け・厄流しに通じ、絶え間ない流れに清浄と再生を願う。
